About AFS

AFS-USA works toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.

• AFS is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization dedicated to intercultural educational exchange and is the most experienced student exchange organization in the world, with more than 55 years of service.
• There are over 270,000 AFS alumni in more than 100 countries around the world. AFS exchanges more than 11,000 students among more than 50 countries annually.
• AFS is supported by 100,000 U.S. and international volunteers, making it one of the largest volunteer-based organizations in the world.

About AFS Steinbeck Coast Area Team

The programs of AFS are administered exclusively by volunteers at the "Area" level throughout the US. The volunteers provide recruitment for students interested in going abroad, families hosting students arriving in our area and the support & oversight of all participants. Our volunteers work to assure that the principles and standards of AFS are upheld.

The Steinbeck Coast Area encompasses a large geography from Santa Cruz to Salinas, Monterey and Carmel, over to Gilroy and down to King City. During 2006-2007, our Area will host approximately 26 students from around the world and will send 20 of our own students to countries such as Costa Rica, Japan, Italy, France, Australia, Argentina, and Chile.
